New Travel Requirements for Europe

ABTA, the UK’s travel trade association, has published a new resource to help travellers prepare for two major changes affecting international travel: the introduction of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

EES, a new electronic system, will replace traditional passport stamping on arrival in EU/Schengen countries, with a launch date set for autumn 2024. ETIAS, a travel authorisation system, will require travellers to apply online before their trip, with a scheduled launch in mid-2025.

ABTA has launched a consumer-facing website (www.abta.com/eesandetias) that will be updated regularly with information on both systems. The website aims to provide a trusted source of information for consumers who may have questions about the new systems.

“EES and ETIAS are significant developments that will require travellers to adapt.”

You will not need an ETIAS when travelling to Ireland, as this is part of the Common Travel Area.

Travel Insurance

When visiting Europe, obtaining appropriate travel insurance is crucial due to the complexity and unpredictability of medical care and other issues that can arise. European healthcare systems are generally of high quality, but they often require upfront payment and may not cover all medical expenses, especially for non-residents. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind by covering unexpected medical emergencies, such as hospitalisations, surgeries, evacuations or repatriations.

Additionally, insurance can also cover trip cancellations or interruptions due to unforeseen events like flight delays, strikes, or natural disasters. With travel insurance, you’ll have access to 24/7 assistance and financial protection in case something goes wrong, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip rather than worrying about the unexpected.
